Dr. phil. Peter Caselitz, born in 1951 in Bremen. After studying chemistry and physics in Münster, he made the exciting move to Hamburg to study archaeology, anthropology and ethnology. Peter like to mention some of the people who were really important to him: F.-W. Rösing, H. Ziegert and J. Jensen. In 1986, Peter finished his dissertation on dietary habits and eating practices of prehistoric populations, published 1986 in Oxford. Since those early days in Hamburg, he has been an independent archaeologist and anthropologist, as well as a lecturer in informatics. Peter participated in numerous archaeological excavations in Germany, Greece, Egypt, Syria and more, and has even led the excavations of some medieval graveyards in northern Germany and one of the largest city excavations in Lübeck. His research is focused on osteoarchaeology, which is the overlap between anthropology and archaeology. He focused his attention on the population history of West and North Germany, cremation as well as inhumation graves, and computer-aided analysis of pottery. Peter is a persistent critic of mediocrity and the spread of the “Peter Principle” in research, teaching, administration, and politics.

Peter is editor of the "Studia Osteoarchaeologica" series as well as co-editor of “Archaeologia Atlantica” series, and has been long-time advisory board member of "Homo" and "Archivio per l'Antropologia e I'Etnologia".
